Hatchet Chapters 1-5 Summary Director

"Hatchet" is a realistic-fiction book by Gary Paulsen about a teenage boy named Brian Robenson going to visit his father in Canada flying in a bush-plane. His parents were divorced and it was all that he could think about. It was only him and the pilot in the plane. Before he left, his mother gave him a hatchet. He was sitting in the co-pilot seat and the pilot offered to let him fly it so he did. When the pilot took over again, it was going fine. The pilot started having chest pains and Brian knew that he was having a heart attack. The plane crashed in the woods and Brian was all alone. He began to get thirsty and he drank water from the lake. He made his shelter against a stone with twigs. Brian did not know what he was going to eat. The first five chapters of "Hatchet" are great!

Selection Director

I chose the part where Brian's mom gave him the hatchet. I liked it because MY mom would never in a million years give me ONE!!!!!!! I thought it was cool he got it as if his mom might know what was going to happen and he was going to plunge and maybe not get rescued. How cool would it be if YOU got a hatchet?????????

Hatchet chapters 1-5 disscusion director

  1. Do you think Brian will die?
  2. Do you think the pilot will suddenly come alive and save himself why?
  3. Do you think we will ever learn the big secret behind the divorce?
  4. Do you like this book so far why or why not?
  5. Do you think that he will be reborn if he does die?
  6. Do you think he will make a new life where he is?

Connection Director

I can relate to that feeling, when your doing it for the first time and your anxouis and feel like everything's your fault. When Brian was practicing to fly the plane, I remembered back to all the moments when I was having my first shot at something. And then when everything goes wrong, it seems like the world's shutting down and everything you do is like you should have never tried in the first place- like everything was your fault.

To the left is the Cessna 406 (a.k.a. the plane Brian was attempting to fly.)

What do you think is going to happen? Are brain's parents fighting for divorce?DO you think brain might think of the words and crash the plane?
