Hatchet Chapters 1-5 Summary Director

"Hatchet" is a realistic-fiction book by Gary Paulsen about a teenage boy named Brian Robenson going to visit his father in Canada flying in a bush-plane. His parents were divorced and it was all that he could think about. It was only him and the pilot in the plane. Before he left, his mother gave him a hatchet. He was sitting in the co-pilot seat and the pilot offered to let him fly it so he did. When the pilot took over again, it was going fine. The pilot started having chest pains and Brian knew that he was having a heart attack. The plane crashed in the woods and Brian was all alone. He began to get thirsty and he drank water from the lake. He made his shelter against a stone with twigs. Brian did not know what he was going to eat. The first five chapters of "Hatchet" are great!

Selection Director

I chose the part where Brian's mom gave him the hatchet. I liked it because MY mom would never in a million years give me ONE!!!!!!! I thought it was cool he got it as if his mom might know what was going to happen and he was going to plunge and maybe not get rescued. How cool would it be if YOU got a hatchet?????????

Hatchet chapters 1-5 disscusion director

  1. Do you think Brian will die?
  2. Do you think the pilot will suddenly come alive and save himself why?
  3. Do you think we will ever learn the big secret behind the divorce?
  4. Do you like this book so far why or why not?
  5. Do you think that he will be reborn if he does die?
  6. Do you think he will make a new life where he is?

Connection Director

I can relate to that feeling, when your doing it for the first time and your anxouis and feel like everything's your fault. When Brian was practicing to fly the plane, I remembered back to all the moments when I was having my first shot at something. And then when everything goes wrong, it seems like the world's shutting down and everything you do is like you should have never tried in the first place- like everything was your fault.

To the left is the Cessna 406 (a.k.a. the plane Brian was attempting to fly.)

What do you think is going to happen? Are brain's parents fighting for divorce?DO you think brain might think of the words and crash the plane?

Ranger's Apprentice Summary

"The Ranger's Apprentice Book 1: The Ruins of Gorlan" is a fiction book by John Flanagan about a boy named Will that is picked to be an apprentice to a Ranger. He has to learn the arts of being a Ranger. He practices shooting targets with a bow and arrow. He also receives other weapons such as a knife and throwing knife. Will gets a horse named Tug for transportation. At the end, Will is given the opportunity to become a knight but declines it. Halt tells Will about a story of when Will's father saved him. "The Ranger's Apprentice" is a great fiction book.

Art Director :)

I drew a picture of when Sir Rodney came up to Will and the two armed soldier and said, "WHAT THE HELL, DO YOU THINK YOUR DOING?!!!??"
And then while that occurred I drew a picture of Halt chasing down the Kalkara.

Selection Director

I liked the part where Will chose not to be a night. I liked it because I didn`t know what he would do. He might say no he might say yes. I especially liked it because everyone was surprised when Will decided not to be a night.

Discussion Director

  1. How do you think that the hunt for the Kalkara went? Even though they were both killed, do you think that the battle went the best way? Do you think that they weren't smart in falling in the same situation as the boar hunt?
  2. How skilled do you think Halt is compared to the other Rangers? Do you think all of them are like him?
  3. Do you think that Will is a abnormally skilled apprentice, or just average?
  4. How is this setting connected to medieval times? Do you think that some sort of group of people back then were like the Rangers?
  5. According to Cryptid Hunters, there is a group in the military called the Rangers that know every way to kill a man with only hands. Are these two elite groups related? Or, is it just a coincidence?
  6. How did Will and Halt's relationship as an apprentice and master change when Will learned of Halt's background with Will's dad? Are they more than just an apprentice and master now?
  7. Has Will adopted Halt's dry sense of humor? Or has he always been that way?
  8. Do you think most Ranger's apprentices have the connection (other than his father) that Will and Halt has?

I am connecting to the part where Will, Halt, and Gilan are walking through The Solitary Plain  and it seems like they are going nowhere. I have been on a walk before where it seems like you going nowhere when you really are.

Chapters 21-27 is about Will meeting Galin then setting out to kill Morgraths new servants. The Kalkara,Halt and Galin think they are going for ether King Duncan or the Gorlan Ruins.Halt and Will have been tracking them and they are worried that something bad will happen.Like the kalkara will succeed in there mission.Or that they might get injured in there operation.

Chapters 21- 26 Selection

I really enjoyed the part in Ranger's Apprentice where they hear the Kalkara. I could hear the Kalkara and feel the fear Will was feeling. After all, he's just an apprentice and he is already tracking deadly creatures. This part brought my "high definition" feeling to me. :)

Ranger's Apprentice chapters 16-21 Selection director

This week as selection director i actually had two favorite parts.  My first part was when Halt and Will were doing Will's tracking session because it makes it feel so like you are right in nature.  My second favorite part was when Will and Horace totally forgot their childhood fights and they made up and became friends. ;)

Friday, March 23, 2012

Chapters 16 through 21 were mostly about how all of WIll's old "roommates" meet at the fair on their free day. Horace and Will get in a fight and resolvee to finish it some other time since the battleschool master stopped it. A few days later, Will and Halt find a farmer who is looking for a wild boar. That sequence turns into a massive boar hunt that Horace and the other boar hunters attend as well as Will, Halt, and the Baron himself. Will saves Horace's life and they agree that if the other person needs help, they had each others backs.

The Ranger's Apprentice chapters 10-15 Connection director by lorrie gray

A connection I had while reading this is when Will first met tug.  At this part I connected to the first time i saw a horse up close and got to ride it.  With this i can relate how will is feeling when he finds that Tug is his own horse.

Selection Director

My favorite part of chapters 10-15 would probably be chapter 12. The whole chapter was amusing because Old Bob continued to laugh at Will, which in my opinion was funny. I also enjoyed meeting Tug.
    SUMMARY DIRECTOR

Chapters 10-15 in the book Rangers Apprentice by John Flanagan, are mostly about Will and Horace are doing in their apprenticeship. It tells about how Horace is considered an "advanced" student but he doesn't know it. The chapters also tell about how Will is doing with Halt. This is a great book and I can't wait to continue reading.

He gets all of it done by noon. The Ranger tells Will that he is already good with the techniques of stealth. Will is going to be a good apprentice.

Rangers Apprentice (chapters 5-10) Discussion Director

7. If Cole woud had never recommended this book, would you still be interested in it if you found it in a library? Why or why not?
8. Is there a favorite part in chapters 5-10 where you either questioned it or liked it very much?

11. How do you think the author had the idea to make this book and to call it Rangers Apprentice ?

And the final question is..........................
16. If you had the option who's apprentice would you want to be? And why?

I have a few questions to make you wonder from Rangers Apprentice.

Chapters 5-10 Connection

The connection I made when reading chapters 5-10 was with how, even though Will would prefer battle school, being a Ranger's apprentice seems more fitting. Will already has beginning skills of a Ranger, which he demonstrated when he got the note. My connection was that at some point in time, we all will run into a scenario like Will's and want something else, but what we get suits us better than what we had wanted.

Rangers Apprentice (chapters 1-4) Summary Director

Rangers Apprentice a fictional book (chapters 1-4) by John Flanagan is mostly about what they call The Choosing Day at The Ward, the Choosing Day is the day they find out who their apprentice master is. And Will was known as the shortest, so at the Choosing, all the apprentice masters told Baron Arald that he was too short, and they had no use for him. Will had been so disappointed because his dad was in battleschool, and Will wanted to follow in his foot steps. Halt ( one of the apprentice masters) handed Baron a note telling him something he knew about Will, so Will could be someone's apprentice. Discover what the note said and who Will will end up with by reading more.

Ranger's apprentice chapters 1-4 discussion director

  3. Why didn't Will get accepted to battleschool?
  4. What do you think will happen to Will?

  6. How do you think Will will take him not being chosen as an apprentice?
  7. What did you infer about these chapters we read?
  8. What era does this take place?

Selection Director

Hi this is JACKSONZABEST here. I was told to blog out my favorite part in chapters 1-4 so that's what I'm going to do.

My favorite part was when they were introducing the craftmaster wards and everyone was excited to choose the path they will be taking. I like this part because the book said that everyone got so excited but Will --not so much.

Books to Choose From at Colorow

Here are some titles that I believe would be a good fit for your group (plus you won't have to worry about going to the library or finding other copies):

Elephant Run, by Roland Smith

The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster

Pictures of Hollis Woods, by Patricia Reilley Giff

A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle

Book Selection

We need to select a book that you can read as a group for your literacy circle.  Because we have limited book copies, I can suggest a few titles that we have here at Colorow that I think would work well.  If you you decide to choose a book that we do not have multiple copies of at Colorow, you will each need to be able to quickly find it in the library, or purchase it on your own.  As a group, discuss what you would like to do.
